SHA-256 hash generator
A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and a tiny change gives a completely different one. It is used to check files, sign data and store password verifiers. Zest does not offer MD5 because it is broken for security use.
Hashes of “hello”Computed in your browser with the Web Crypto API. MD5 isn't offered because it is broken.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Read the four hashes.
- Copy the one you need.
This tool is also built into Zest search, so you can type your question into the search box and get the same answer above the results.
Common questions
- Can a hash be reversed?
- Not directly. But short or common inputs can be guessed, so never store plain SHA-256 of passwords. Use a slow password hash such as Argon2 or bcrypt.
- Which SHA should I use?
- SHA-256 is the common default. SHA-1 is only for legacy compatibility because collisions are practical.
